Hello and welcome to 7 Sage Tutor Group,
We are delighted to let you all know that all pupils have settled in well and are enjoying their first term here at Furrowfield.
During tutor time we have an array of activities to help build social and emotional wellbeing and promote positive mental health. We also support literacy and assist pupils in learning lifelong literacy skills. The activities that we do during tutor time are:
- Accelerated reader
- Tutor led and individual reading
- Calms for school programme – meditation
- E.D programme
During lesson time pupils have studied many topics in different subjects.
In English they looked at contemporary fiction and studied the novel Holes, learning to:
- Apply their growing knowledge of root words, prefixes and suffixes (morphology and etymology), both to read aloud and to understand the meaning of new words.
- Check that the book makes sense to them, discussing their understanding and exploring the meaning of words in context.
- Predicting what might happen from details stated and implied.
- Identifying the audience for and purpose of the writing, selecting the appropriate form and using other similar writing as models for their own.
They also worked towards strengthening spelling, grammar and punctuation skills along with their handwriting.
In science they have studied Living Things and their Habitats for biology. This allowed them to look at many different species. The group really seemed to enjoy this topic and they looked at animals, plants and insects in their natural environment. The class collected/gathered materials to make a habitat for local birds and they also made ‘spider catchers’. The class visited the local nature reserve to view these creatures in their natural surroundings.
In PSHE, we have been looking at relationships and currently we have started a new topic on bullying. We have been looking at what bullying is, why it happens and how to prevent it. We are creating posters and we are going to use ICT to create an informational video to disseminate information about bullying and create positive peer relationships.
This half term we are currently undertaking a project that incorporates many subjects such as English, humanities, art and science. We have based our project on World War 1, to make the 100 years centenary since the end of the war.
Pupils are currently studying the novel War Horse and we have linked this novel with historical facts. We are hoping to take the children to view a performance of the novel on stage.
In art we have been improving our mastery of techniques such as cutting, sticking, painting and sculpture. We have been modelling in response to drawing and painting, looking at modelling for a purpose and artists such as Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada. One of our tasks is to create our own Papier Mache warhorse and soldier.
We are also working with Historic England and taking part in a local history project linking the North East with World War 1.
Myself and Ms Metcalfe really enjoy working with our pupils in 7 Sage and look forward to the coming New Year.
